NMMC Standing Committee Accepts Audit Report Sans Auditor

November 8, 2007
The Standing Committee of NMMC demanded that action on all 288-audit queries of 16 departments in the corporation be placed before the committee, though it was not done in the last two years.
Ramakant Mhatre then questioned the absence of an auditor in the corporation to which the Committee Chairman Sandeep Naik hinted at appointing an independent firm for the same. The deputy Municipal Commissioner in charge of administration Jagannath Sinnarkar admitted that the corporation was without an auditor since Dhande was relieved 1 and a half years ago and inspite of demand made to the State Govt. for filling the post, no replacement could be sent and hence Sinnarkar was asked to take charge since the last 10 days. Ramakant Mhatre made a shocking revelation, which is an open secret, that for over an year after Dhande, it as the chief accounts and finance officer Kongle, who was looking after the audit too – indeed a strange case of the accountant verifying and attesting his own accounts as correct. Sandeep Naik assured the committee and instructed the administration to explore the possibility of advertising and appointing an auditor by NMMC directly.
